Hal Gillam is a vice president with CDM Smith’s International Development Group, managing a global team that seeks to deliver world-class expertise for locally led sustainable development; in 25 years with the employee-owned firm, he has provided leadership for multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multigenerational teams to develop client-focused solutions for infrastructure implementation and institutional development in the water, environment, transportation, energy, and facilities sectors worldwide. He brings skills and experience in facilitation, media and public relations, community development, stakeholder engagement, research and analysis, strategic planning, and organizational development; knowledge of urban and rural planning and development, municipal governance, and environment and climate change; and direct experience with renewable energy policy development and implementation involving broad-based community engagement to develop a 7MW solar power project. Prior to joining CDM Smith, he served as a corporate communications and public relations specialist for the global policyholder-owned insurance and risk management firm now known as Factory Mutual Insurance Company (FM Global); in this role, he facilitated collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Weather Service and conducted media outreach to build national awareness of climate risks, the increasing intensity of severe weather and natural disasters, and the importance of mitigation and adaptation. Previously, as a reporter with family-owned newspapers – and charter member of the Society of Environmental Journalists – he reported on environment and development, urban planning and inner-city redevelopment, and numerous other community, state, and national issues. He has B.A. in Journalism with a double major in International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
